Oral history and photographs, 1988.

This collection consists primarily of an oral history given by Joseph P. Butzloff in the spring of 1988. The questions were prepared by Florida State Archives staff member David Coles and read to Mr. Butzloff by his son. The oral history deals primarily with Butzloff's service in the Florida Guard. He details his participation in the Mexican Punitive Expedition and in World War I. No transcription of the interview is available.

Joseph P. Butzloff was born in Brunswick, Georgia on April 5, 1896. After moving to Florida he enlisted in Company H, Second Infantry, Florida National Guard on September 24, 1914. In 1916-1917 Butzloff served with his unit along the Texas-Mexican Border. During the First World War he served in France with the 116th Machine Gun Battalion. The Florida National Guard was established in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws) replacing the Florida State Troops. From 1921 until 1973, the Guard was placed under the Military Dept (Ch. 8502, Laws).
